Centre decides to introduce 13-digit mobile numbers from July 1

The Telecommunication Department has issued guidelines for all telecom operators in the country to issue mobile numbers with 13 numbers for customers soon. The news was confirmed by a senior BSNL official who told to News that the directive from DoT had come on January 8, 2018, post which the company has started working on it. The decision has been taken to provide better security features to users.

The existing mobile numbers also will be converted to 13 digit numbers. It has been suggested to transfer existing mobile numbers to 13 numbers by December 31, 2018.

Migration of existing 10-digit M2M numbers will start latest by 1 October 2018 and shall be completed by 31 December 2018,” the official was quoted saying in the report.

The BSNL official said that the process of issuing 13 digit numbers will begin from July 1. From July 1, 13 digit mobile numbers will be issued. The current 10 digit mobile numbers will also be rolled out from October 1. Another telecom company Bharti Airtel has also revealed the issue. In a letter to Troy, the Telecom Department approved the 13 digit number system. The Ministry of Communications also reported that the letter to Troy has approved the 13 digit number system for simulated machine-to-machine devices.

If the decision is implemented, India will become the country with the longest mobile numbers, with China the only country at scale with 11 digit mobile numbers, not counting the area code.
